J. Otto Seibold distorts the image of Alice to which we have been accustomed, even though different in style, by the illustrators' interpretations from the early 20th century to today. In the pop-up book made by only six animated plates, the artist presents a new Alice deprived of romanticism, fairy atmosphere and crinoline which often has accompanied Carroll's tale. The pop-up mechanisms are simple, not spectacular and they do not distract the reader's attention from the super-coloured and graphically very cool and dynamic illustrations. Everything works perfectly in Seibold's story; the text, minimized and composed by extravagant fonts, comes alongside with the illustrations and, in a certain sense, becomes a substantial part of it. Thanks to the balance of all the elements by which it is composed, this book can be considered not just an illustrated book but a perfect graphic artwork.

J. Otto Seibold's biography.
He is an American contemporary illustrator and author of books for adults and children. Seibold born in 1960 in Oakland CA, city in which he lives. His parents are both immigrants, his father from Germany and his mother from Romania. Before he became a famous illustrator Seibold worked as a drafter, an architectural designer, and a freelance editorial illustrator. Most of his early books are made with the collaboration of his wife Vivian Walsh.
This is what J. Otto Seibold writes about himself
Proof I don't like writing bios:
J. Otto Seibold was born in Oakland California in 1960. Grew up an apricots-throw away from the John Muir Home in Martinez CA.
With no formal art training he was able to sneak into the art world during the "outsider artist" craze of the 1990's. He is the first person to create childrens books digitally with "Mr. lunch takes a plane ride" (1993) and has continued publishing for 20 years. His book "Olive the other reindeer" (1996) spawned an animated television special of the same name. James has three children and after many far flung homes, currently lives in Oakland CA. He remains uncomfortable referring to himself in the third person.
