Edizioni Anarchismo. Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie.

In every edition of Wonderland we meet a new Alice, but in the Edizioni Anarchismo's edition there is not a trace of the English little girl. She doesn't appear neither in the text nor in the pictures. Alice and Wonderland, in fact, in this little book, are transformed in a sort of symbol or, to be precise, metaphor of the struggle for national liberation.

Pippo Gurrieri

Was born in 1955 in Ragusa. He is anarchic, railway worker, trade unionist, manager of the publishing house Sicilia Punto L, director of the magazine Sicilia Libertaria and journalist. His real name is Giuseppe Guerrieri.

Andrea Chersi

He is an Italian contemporary translator. He works mostly as translator of text about political topic or provocative content. He is the director of the publishing house Chersilibri and he is also the author of few pamphlets.

About the book

Due to an error of the employees of the library, I have in my hands a very curious little book entitled Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie published by Edizioni Anarchismo.

Expecting to receive a picture book by the famous Italian 'figurinaio' Piero Bernardini, I immediately notice the difference. Partly for laziness - explaining why that was not the edition I requested - and partly for curiosity, I decided to keep the book and, without opened it, I sliped it in my bag to take it home.

The cover is very simple: there is Lewis Carroll name written on, the title, the publisher and a red monochrome drawing, in which are depicted four Carabiniere who take aim with the rifles against a group of people, near a large inscription 'flour and bred'.  

I recognize immediately what edition it is and I remember having read somewhere that it was the first translation into Italian, Sicilian of Carroll's book. Nothing could be more wrong. Looking at the small volume of only 32 pages,  I realize that there is no trace of Carroll in the book. A note in the book warns the reader that the little book is an Italian translation of a short English text entitled Alice in Wonderland and Lewis Carroll appeared as the author. The provenance of the text is obscure, perhaps from Amsterdam or Brussels, but it certainly was drafted in 1976. Focusing on the content, the note explains that this is a program of "a Sicilian organization of a struggle for national liberation". The first chapter briefly analyzed the Southern Italy question and especially that one in Sicily. Other chapters are as follows: "The forming of modern States", "Destruction of native Language", "Impossibility of a traditional saparatist discourse", "Revolutionary proletarian internationalism", " The internationalist revolutionary organization for national liberation", "Our struggle for indipendence", "Propaganda for independence", "The armed struggle", "Who are our allies?".

The book also contains the original text in English.

In the booklet there are some black and white illustrations that refer to violent acts that occurred in Sicily in the late nineteenth and early seventies of the twentieth century. The authors are not professional or famous illustrators, maybe it is for the scenes depicted, but the designs are very striking. The cover, described above, is the work of Nuccio Battaglia and refers to an incident that happened on February 22nd in1898 in Modica; "Soldiers and police firing on the crowd in protest of the increase of bread." Battaglia also made three others illustrations: "Bronte, August1860, garibaldini who shoot the common people", "July 8th '60, demonstration for the deaths of Reggio Emilia, 4 killed in Palermo, 1 in Catania " and "Avola December 2nd, 1968, the police charged the laborers on strike, 2 dead". Two others illustrations are made by Nunzio B.: "1892-1893, born and develop the Fasci Siciliani: expression of revolutionary democracy that rises from the bottom" and "Portella delle ginestre 1-5-1947, Giuseppe Impastato 9-5-1978, Salvatore Carnevale 16-5-1955." Pippo Gurrieri illustrates: "Ragusa, April 9th, 1921, shoot of fascist and massari, killed two labourer " e "Ragusa, January 6th, 1945, popular armed uprising against the war." Finally, "March 1282, the Sicilian Vespers", the only except outside the historical context of '800-900, that is illustrated by the only female figure that appears in the book: Giovanna S.

About the Carroll's story we have just the titile left and, in a sense, the idea of a Wonderland to be realized only through an organized armed struggle for national liberation from capitalism. Alice, who in the seventies had become the hero of the counterculture, becomes the metaphor of a anarchist program of a revolutionary struggle.
