Emma Chichester Clark. Alice in Wonderland.

A merry brigade keeps company to Alice in her games and adventures in the backyard. Emma Chichester Clark gives to  younger readers as well as to grown ups, a joyful and amusing story set in a world full of things to discover. The bright colours and the appealing illustrations of the English author transform Lewis Carroll's classic in a contemporary tale in which dreams and reality are the same thing.

Emma Chichester Clark's biography.

(1955-)

A popular and prolific author, illustrator, and anthologist, Emma Chichester Clark is considered one of England's most distinguished picture-book creators. Cited alongside noted illustrators Beatrix Potter, Edward Ardizzone, Tony Ross, and Quentin Blake—her former teacher—she has written and illustrated many of her own picture books while also creating accompanying artwork for numerous stories, picture books, anthologies, and retellings by other writers, including Roald Dahl, Anne Fine, Peter Dickinson, Allan Ahlberg, Rosemary Sutcliff, Sam McBratney, Diana Wynne Jones, John Yeoman, Naomi Lewis, Matthew Price, Janet Lunn, Jenny Nimmo, and Geraldine McCaughrean. In her own books, which include Up in Heaven, The Story of Horrible Hilda and Henry, and the award-winning I Love You, Blue Kangaroo!, she features child, adult, and animal characters in situations that, although usually humorous and fantastic, provide realistic portrayals of human feelings and foibles. Gwyneth Evans noted in an essay for the St. James Guide to Children's Writers that Chichester Clark's original stories "are reassuring, but have an underlying toughness." Their protagonists—boys and girls, older women, and anthropomorphized animals ranging from donkeys to lemurs—are not perfect: they fight, tease, overeat, and are greedy and absent minded. However, they ultimately make positive choices and; at the end of their adventures, return home, satisfied with their situation.

About the book

Emma Chichester Clark's book from the first page appears like one of those old notebooks, with the label for the name, which I used to have at primary school. The illustrator and the publisher created, with the illustrations and the layout design, a book with a familiar and reassuring atmosphere which breaks down the barriers between the author and the reader, who is almost encouraged to write or make some sketches on it by him/herself. Any reader's contribution would not compromise the balance of the book and would be completely integrated with Emma Chichester Clark's style. My reference to the old notebooks I used to have doesn't means that the book has a vintage style; I think this is indeed one interpretation which gives us a very contemporary Alice. Carroll's story is not distorted, but is abridged and adapted to be read by a young audience who will find in this classic an amusing story which shows a new fantastic world populated by peculiar and friendly creatures. The illustrator builds a Wonderland fit for children, in which the sense of disquiet, that comes from some ambiguous situations described by Carroll, has been masterfully replaced by a cheerful atmosphere. Some of the characters are no longer weird and seem more to be dressed up friends for a pantomime rather than inhabitants of a fantastic land. Emma Chichester Clark tells us of an afternoon spent in the backyard or a beautiful excursion to countryside — remarkable is the presence of nature's elements, such as plants and flowers, depicted with an almost scientific meticulousness —  during which you can meet a caterpillar among the leaves, a playful puppy dog and many others friends with whom to spend the free time. This joyful world fit for children, thanks to the elegance of  the bright colour illustrations rich in details, becomes an attraction for adult readers too.
